Verb of the Day

The Verb of the Day module provides you with a random verb out of the over 3,660 verbs included with Spanish Verb Conjugation. Every day you will see a new verb here. We ensure the verbs are not repeated until you’ve seen all 3,660 verbs. That’s a new verb every day for the next 10 years!

We’ve included what we think are the most common 3,660 verbs; so this is a great way to increase your Spanish vocabulary. We encourage you to play it every day with your activated tenses.

Learn New Verb

The Learn New Verb module will present a list of the next 10 verbs in order of importance. It also helps to know that many common verbs have irregular conjugations which may take more time to learn.

Spanish Verb Conjugation's Learn New Verb initial verb list.
Learn New Verb in order of importance

This module ensures that you will learn the most often used verbs first; before moving on to learning verbs that are used less often in daily conversation. Furthermore, if you add one or more activated tenses, this module will put all the verbs that you’ve already learned back on this list to ensure that once again, you learn the new conjugations of the most important verbs first.

This module is why we created Spanish Verb Conjugation. We couldn’t find a fun, effective way to learn all the tenses of the most common and typically irregular Spanish verbs.

Revise Verbs

The Revise Verbs module will present the verbs that are due for revision today. To ensure that you don’t forget the conjugations of the verbs you’ve learned in the Learn New Verb module, we automatically present you with the verbs that have tenses that you should revise in order of priority. The revision cycle is based on our version of the spaced repetition methodology to ensure you make the most of your learning time and repeat only when needed instead of every day.

When you’ve completed all your revision, or you have no verbs to revise, this list will be empty, and you will see a notification message pop up to inform you that there are no verbs to revise. Remember to come back here each day.

Progress

Here you can see a track record of your daily progress in each of the Verb of the Day, Learn New Verb and Revise Verbs modules. We don’t track your progress on the Search module. That module is there for your convenience.

There is a separate calendar for for each of the three modules. Every day that you complete the learning assigned for a learning module, you will receive a gold star. You will receive a partial gold star if you only partially completed the assigned learning for the module. For example, if you complete 2 tenses out of your 3 activated tenses; or you complete all your activated tenses for one verb, but not all 4 verbs you need to revise.

You will get a blue star for every day you did nothing in that module.

Spanish Verb Conjugation's Daily Progress Report for revision.
Daily Progress Report: Revision

To get a gold star for the Verb of the Day module, simply play and win all your activated tenses for that day’s Verb of the Day.

To get a gold star for the Learn New Verb module, learn all the activated tenses for one of the next 10 most important verbs. I say one, but if you’ve increased your New Verbs Per Day Goal in the Options, you will need to learn all the activated tenses for that many verbs! We also count the number of tenses learned. So, if you have five activated tenses and you learn one tense from five different verbs, that will also count as a verb learned.

To get a gold star for the Revise Verbs module, simply complete all the allocated revision. If there are no verbs to revise, simply clicking on the Revise Verbs button on the Home Screen will be enough.

The Home Screen will also indicate whether you have received your gold star for each module for the day, by putting a green tick in the top right-hand corner of the button for each learning module.

Settings

Settings have been grouped into three categories: Games, Tenses and Options. Select the desired category, by clicking on the respective button at the top of the screen.

When you’re done changing settings. Click on OK to save them and return to the Home Screen. All changes are saved, so it’s okay to also simply press the back button: the left angled bracket in the top left-hand corner of the screen.

Games

Here you can decide which game you want to play: the Flowers game or the Pick From Three game. Both games are linked to all the learning modules. They both present you with the required person for the selected tense and the current verb. So it doesn’t matter which game you choose. The difference is only your preferred style of play.

The Flowers game provides a relaxed, pretty flow of colourful flowers across the screen. The Pick From Three game provides a more high-paced, time-pressured rapid fire game. See Example Game for more details.

With the Flowers game, you also have the option to change the speed of the game. The Flower Speed setting can be varied from 30% (very slow) to 300% (very fast) of the default speed. If you’re a beginner, you may want to slow the speed of the flowers until you get used to the game. At higher speeds, you’ll soon find that it’s not only the Pick From Three game that is high-paced.

Finally, you also have the option to show the speed slider in the Flowers game. This allows you to adjust the speed of play without having to exit the active game. It’s useful to slow the flowers down for those tenses that are new or just more difficult to learn. You may also find it useful to temporarily speed up the flowers, if you find the right tense is not there.

On the Tenses screen, you can activate and deactivate the tenses that you want to play. You can choose to play all the tenses or just those which you have already learned in school. The choice is yours. All the tenses with a tick in the box and the wooden banner will be included in the game.

Options

Here you can set multiple items:

  • The New Verbs Per Day Goal lets you select how many new verbs you want to learn every day? The minimum is 1 and the maximum is 10. Remember that each tense of each verb you learn will be added to your revision. Therefore, we suggest you keep this number low to keep your workload manageable.
  • Show Conjugation allows you to choose whether you want to see the correct conjugation before starting each game. If you’re confident that you already know all the correct conjugations then feel free to choose not to see them before starting each game.
  • The Home Screen will show you how many verbs have a tense that is due for revision. If you’re not using the Revise Verbs module, or you’re unable to keep up to date with your revision, this number will quickly increase and become meaningless. You can choose whether or not to show how many verbs are due for revision each day with the Show Revision Verbs Count option. If you would rather not know, then remove the tick and we won’t show you the number on the Home Screen.
  • Some countries start the week on a different day. If you’d rather see your Progress calendars start on a different day, change the Week Starts On option to your preferred day: either Saturday, Sunday or Monday.
  • Last, but not least, you can Reset Learning. Sometimes your revision gets out of hand, or you simply haven’t been playing Spanish Verb Conjugation for a while. Sometimes you just want to start your learning again. Reset Learning will reset the Learn New Verb and Revise Verbs learning modules. This means you will start from the beginning again. You will be presented with the first ten, most important verbs in the Learn New Verb module, and any previously learned verbs will no longer show up in the Revise Verbs module.
NOTE: You cannot undo Reset Learning. Once your learning is reset, it will be gone for good and you must learn all the verbs and activated tenses again. However, your daily Progress record will be unaffected.

Example Game

Spanish Verb Conjugation provides you with two games: Flowers and Pick From Three. In the Flowers game, flowers gently float up the screen and you have to select (touch) the flower with the correct conjugation. In the Pick From Three game, you’re presented with three options, and you must select the correct one.

We suggest you start with the Flowers game, which provides a more relaxed, flowing way to learn, but feel free to try both. The learning modules don’t mind which game you choose, so feel to mix and match too.

You can change the current game in the settings at any time. All three learning modules (Verb of the Day, Learn New Verb and Revise Verbs) use the selected current game. If you change the current game, all three modules will use the new, selected current game.

You can also specify which of the ten tenses you would like to focus on. You can select all 10 tenses or just one or mix and match depending on what you need. Activated tenses can be managed in Settings under Tenses. We suggest you only activate the tenses that you have already learned how to use. If you’re just starting on your Spanish learning journey, this will be the present tense or presente in Spanish.

Verb and Tense Selection

Let’s start with Learn New Verb. When you click on the button, you will see a list of the 10 next most important verbs to learn in order of priority. Of course, if you’ve never played before, this will be the list of the 10 most important verbs that you should learn first.

The first verb is ser which means to be with a light blue star next to it. The light blue star indicates that you have not yet learned any of the verb’s tenses. As you learn each of the ten tenses, this star will slowly be filled in.

Click on the button with the verb you’d like to learn. You will be presented with the list of the ten most important tenses. Tenses that are inactive are greyed out. Initially only presente, the present tense, will be active.

You can change the activated tenses in the Tenses Settings at any time. Or you can click on one of the greyed out buttons and activate an inactive tense here. Click on “Presente” or your desired tense, and you will be presented with the correct conjugation of the verb for that tense:

Flowers Game

Once you’ve selected your desired Verb and Tense and started the game, if you haven’t changed the default, or you selected the Flowers game in the Games Settings, the screen should look similar to:

Spanish Verb Conjugation's Flowers game.
Flower game with verbser at the beginning of the game: 20 verbs and 3 lives remaining

On the left top you have the person which is asked for, the verb in the infinitive “ser” and the tense which is being asked for. On the top right, you see how many verbs are remaining in the game and how many lives you have used up. Lives are the maximum number of errors you can make.

It is your job now to click on the flower showing the correct conjugation for the verb, tense and person requested.

When you click (touch) a flower, it will disappear. If your choice is correct a green “+1” will appear in its place, and the remaining verbs will decrease by 1.

You win once you have correctly picked 20 conjugations for the verb and tense asked for in this round. You will know this because you’ll see the “Remaining” score is “0” and there will be fireworks on the screen.

Pick From Three Game

Once you’ve selected your desired Verb and Tense and started the game, if you’ve selected the Pick from Three game in the Games Settings, the screen should look similar to:

On the top you have a banner giving you important information: On the left, you will see how many verbs still need to be conjugated correctly in the game. In the middle, you will see the time you have taken so far. And on the right, you will see how many lives you have remaining. Lives are the maximum number of errors you can make.

In the main part of the screen, you will see three words: the person which is asked for, then below is the verb selected in the infinitive. In our case “ser”. Below that, the tense selected.

Finally, you will see three buttons with three possible answers: One is the correct conjugation. Two will have an incorrect conjugation. It is your job to click on the button showing the correct conjugation for the details requested.

If your choice is correct, you’ll see a green “+1” appear over the requested details, and your verbs remaining decreases by 1.

Pro Tips

The most important step is to understand which game suits your playing style: The Pick From Three game or the Flowers game. Our recommendation is to play both for a while to understand what works best for you. Then select what you feel most comfortable with and start playing.

Search box

Even when you are not actively playing, if you want to quickly check the conjugation of a verb, you can always do that by entering the verb here.

Flowers Game

The flowers float up the screen and then disappear behind the status bar. You can click on them whilst you see them but once hidden behind the bar, they are no longer active and you can’t select them.

The Flowers game has a speed slider which is not visible by default. If you want to speed the game up or slow it down, go to the Games Settings via the hamburger Menu on the Home Screen. Then select the Show speed slider in game option. You can also change the speed in the settings directly.

Now when you play the Flowers game, you will be able to change the speed whilst playing without having to exit the game.

Pick From Three

Pick From Three is a great option if you want to limit the options to choose from. Having only three options to choose from makes it a little easier and less stressful than having all 6 options flow past. That’s why it may be a good entry point if you are just starting out.

Not relying on the speed slider can also make it a very fast game to play, depending on your skill level. Having said that, don’t let the timer on the top of the screen pressure you into making mistakes. You will finish your daily practice faster if you choose the correct conjugations first time.

Overall / General

One successful strategy for learning conjugation is to practice at least one word per day. Practising the Verb of the Day is a good option since it will allow you to practice conjugation as well as (potentially) learn a new verb.

Consistency is key when learning a new skill. Spending 5 minutes a day every day will produce better results than doing a couple of hours once a month.

For beginners, it may be useful to focus on the tenses being taught in class and align their practice with school. You can change the activated tenses in the settings and switch tenses on or off based on your needs.

Randomly changing which tense you play next will result in better learning outcomes. If you always follow the same order, it is easy to fall into the trap of anticipating the next conjugation pattern. That is why it is suggested to switch it up at times.

After having learned multiple conjugations, the verbs will show up in the Revise Verbs list. The repetition is based on spaced repetition and will help solidify your knowledge. This also means that the revision section can grow rather long if you learn multiple verbs per day. Depending on your goals and preferences, you may decide to focus on new verbs or alternatively, prioritize the revision of previously learned verbs.

With many irregular verbs, the conjugation pattern is similar yet different – sometimes in only one person and one tense. Therefore, it pays to either check over the correct conjugation reminder prior to start the game or learn the hard way.

Last but not least, have fun. If you enjoy the experience, then learning will become a lot easier.
